Is the Purple Mattress Worth It? What Testers Found Before You Buy

Testers found the Purple Mattress cools and relieves pressure well for an all-foam bed but suits lighter side and back sleepers best; here is what the trial and warranty really commit Purple to.

Quick Verdict

Mixed results

Bottom line: Testers found the Purple cools and relieves pressure well for an all-foam bed. It is a weaker choice for sleepers over about 230 pounds and for stomach sleepers, and the refund and warranty conditions need checking before you buy.

Best for
Side and back sleepers under about 230 pounds who sleep warm
Main concern
Refund terms that differ between Purple's own pages, and a warranty that depends on your bed frame

Research-based: public sources and consumer feedback, not hands-on testing. How we review

The Purple Mattress is built around something no ordinary foam mattress has: a stretchy polymer grid in place of the usual top layer of memory foam. That grid is the reason people buy it, and the reason some send it back. This report sets out what published testers found, where the complaints are, and what the trial and warranty actually commit Purple to. It covers the original all-foam Purple Mattress, not the company’s hybrid models. We did not test it.

Key takeaways

  • Sleep Foundation testers found it cools well for an all-foam bed and relieves pressure, with good motion isolation
  • The grid feels unusual, and reviewers say it takes getting used to
  • It is rated too soft for most sleepers over 230 pounds and a poor match for stomach sleepers
  • The 100-night trial requires you to sleep on it for 21 nights first, and Purple's own pages disagree on whether shipping is deducted from a refund
  • The 10-year warranty covers indentations deeper than one inch and has strict rules about the base you put it on

What Testers Liked

  • Airflow through the open grid: the Sleep Foundation calls its cooling strong for an all-foam bed, and an earlier Consumer Reports test found it stays cool
  • Pressure relief, with the grid contouring and the foam beneath stopping sleepers sinking too far
  • Good motion isolation, which suits couples
  • Easier to move on than many memory foam beds

Reported Drawbacks

From the Sleep Foundation's published review, and from Purple's own warranty and returns pages.

  1. The feel divides people

The review says the grid contours like memory foam but responds more quickly, and that it feels unusual and may take time to get used to. This is a matter of taste, not a fault, and it is what the trial is for.

  2. Too soft for heavier sleepers

Testers found it suited side sleepers and most back sleepers under about 230 pounds. Above that weight, the review says, sleepers are likely to find it too soft and should look at a firmer bed.

  3. Stomach sleepers

Stomach sleepers were the least comfortable group in testing. The review says those who sleep only on their front, or who weigh over about 130 pounds, will probably want something firmer.

  4. Edges and lifespan

Edge support was rated average, with some sinkage when sitting on the side. The review expects a life of about six to seven years, with some sinkage likely after a few years; that is an estimate based on the materials, not a measured result.

  5. Warranty conditions

The warranty is void if the mattress has not been on a firm, solid, non-spring base from the day it was delivered, and Purple may ask for proof. Slats must be no more than 3.5 inches apart, and larger sizes need a center support. Using the mattress without its cover also voids it.

How serious are these problems?

None of them is a safety issue, and we found no Consumer Product Safety Commission recall of a Purple mattress in the notices we searched. They are questions of fit. A mattress that is too soft for your weight, or wrong for your sleeping position, is uncomfortable from the first week, and that is what a trial period is for. The durability estimate matters more over time: the review’s six to seven years is shorter than the ten-year term of the warranty.

The trial, in practice

  • Length. 100 nights, counted from delivery.
  • The 21-night rule. Purple’s return policy says you must sleep on the mattress for at least 21 nights before starting a return.
  • Condition. It must be clean and undamaged with the law tag attached, and Purple may ask for photographs.
  • What you get back. Purple’s pages are not consistent. Its return policy article says the refund is the price less any discount, interest and shipping or transportation charges. A separate article about the trial promises a full refund with no pickup or restocking fee. Ask Purple in writing which applies before you buy.
  • Exchanges. One is allowed, and you pay any upgrade or shipping charges.

A purchase from another retailer may follow that retailer’s terms instead of these.

The warranty, in practice

  • Ten years on the mattress, two on the cover, for the original buyer only. Selling or giving the mattress away ends it.
  • A body impression counts as a defect only if it is deeper than one inch after the mattress has recovered. Shallower dips, changes in firmness and comfort preferences are excluded.
  • After the first 100 days you pay the transport costs on a valid claim.
  • You need your order number or receipt, intact law tags, and photographs.

Our guide to what a warranty covers explains why the exclusions matter more than the number of years.

Who This Product May Suit

  • Side sleepers and back sleepers under about 230 pounds
  • People who sleep warm on ordinary memory foam
  • Couples who are disturbed by each other's movement

Who May Want to Consider Alternatives

  • Sleepers over about 230 pounds, who are likely to find it too soft
  • People who sleep mainly on their stomach
  • Anyone who sits on the edge of the bed a lot, or wants a mattress to last a decade

What to check before you buy

  • Your bed frame. Measure the gap between the slats and check for a center support before the mattress arrives.
  • The refund terms, in writing.
  • Where you are buying it. Trial and warranty terms can differ by retailer.
  • The weight. Consumer Reports lists the queen size it tested at about 91 pounds, so plan for two people to move it.
  • The critical reviews on the listing you are buying from. See how to read negative reviews.

Is It Worth Buying?

Worth trying for lighter side and back sleepers who run warm

The grid does what Purple says on temperature and pressure relief, according to the testers who tried it, and the trial gives you a real chance to find out whether you like the feel. It is a weaker choice if you are over about 230 pounds, sleep on your stomach, or want the longest-lasting bed for the money. Whatever you decide, confirm the refund terms and check your bed frame first, because both can cost you later.

A firmer mattress, for heavier or stomach sleepers

How we researched this

This report is based on the Sleep Foundation’s published review of the Purple Mattress, Consumer Reports’ listing and an earlier comparison test, read as search excerpts, and Purple’s own warranty, returns and support pages. The Sleep Foundation earns commission on mattress sales. We did not test the mattress and did not survey owners, which is why this article does not say how common any complaint is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Purple mattress good for side sleepers?

Sleep Foundation testers found it suited side sleepers under about 230 pounds, thanks to the pressure relief from the grid. Heavier side sleepers may need a firmer bed.

Does the Purple mattress sleep cool?

The Sleep Foundation rates its cooling as strong for an all-foam bed, and an earlier Consumer Reports test found it stays cool. Air moves through the open spaces in the grid.

How long does a Purple mattress last?

The Sleep Foundation’s review expects about six to seven years, with some sinkage after a few. That is an estimate from the materials. The warranty runs for ten years but covers only indentations deeper than one inch.

Can I return a Purple mattress?

Yes, within 100 nights of delivery, after sleeping on it for at least 21 nights. Purple’s pages disagree on whether shipping charges are deducted from the refund, so confirm before buying.

Does a Purple mattress need a special base?

The warranty requires a firm, solid, non-spring foundation or an adjustable base, with slats no more than 3.5 inches apart. Using an unsuitable base voids it.
