Methodology

Every product in our Editor Picks and Review Intelligence Database is scored against the same weighted methodology. We publish it so the scores are reproducible — and so you can argue with our weightings if you disagree.

Scored factors

  • Reliability: How often the product performs as promised across verified-buyer feedback, manufacturer support records, and our own testing. The single heaviest weight.
  • Durability: How well the product holds up after 6, 12, 24 months. We weight long-term ownership reports more heavily than first-week excitement.
  • Value: Quality and lifespan per dollar spent — not just sticker price. A $40 product that lasts five years beats a $20 product that lasts six months.
  • Review authenticity: We discount listings with patterns consistent with fake-review activity (sudden review surges, generic 5-star language, suspicious reviewer histories) and credit listings with healthy verified-buyer footprints.
  • Seller / brand reputation: Documented warranty fulfillment, complaint patterns, listing-hijack history, and responsiveness to legitimate buyer issues.
  • Family / safety profile: Where applicable — choking hazards, recall history, materials and certifications.
  • Editor judgment: A qualitative adjustment for things the numbers miss. Documented, never used to override a clearly inferior product into a top spot.

Weighting

Reliability and durability are the heaviest weights. Value and review authenticity are next. Brand reputation and safety adjust the score up or down at the margins. Editor judgment is bounded — it can move a score within a tier, not flip a bad product into a recommendation.

Not scored

Aesthetics alone. Trending social-media mentions. Sponsored placement. Limited-time discounts. We may note these in passing but they don’t influence the editor score.
