Research-based: owner feedback and public sources. How we review
In this article
Air fryers have become a kitchen staple, and several widely sold models have been recalled since 2022 because they can overheat, catch fire or cause burns. This is a plain-English summary of the main recalls announced through the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and how to check whether the one on your counter is affected.
If your model is listed
Stop using it and follow the instructions in the official recall notice. Recalls apply to specific model numbers, so check yours against the notice before you do anything else.

How to check your air fryer
- Unplug it, let it cool and turn it over. The model number is printed on the rating label underneath, and usually in the manual.
- Find the notice for your brand on the CPSC website and compare the model number, and the sale dates where given.
- If it matches, stop using the appliance and follow the steps in the notice. For the Cosori recall, for example, owners register online and send photographs of the unit with its cord cut, and no receipt is needed.

Keeping this in proportion
A recall is not a verdict on every product a company sells. Each of these notices applies to named models, and other models from the same brands are not affected. It is also worth remembering that the incident counts above are small next to the number of units recalled. The point of checking is not to panic, it is to make sure the one appliance that sits hot and unattended on your worktop is not on a list.
If you are buying an air fryer now
- Search the exact model number on the CPSC site before you buy, especially second-hand or from a clearance listing.
- Register the product with the manufacturer so you are contacted directly if there is a recall.
- Read the recent critical reviews for mentions of smoke, melting plastic or burning smells. Our guide to reading negative reviews shows how to spot a pattern.
- Follow the manual’s instructions on leaving clear space around the appliance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which air fryers have been recalled?
The largest US recall covered about 2 million Cosori air fryers in February 2023. Others include Insignia models sold by Best Buy in 2022 and 2024, PowerXL dual-basket models in December 2023, and smaller recalls of Magic Chef and Secura models.
How do I know if my air fryer is recalled?
Check the model number on the label underneath the appliance against the official notice on the CPSC website. Recalls apply to specific models, not whole brands.
Do I need a receipt to get a replacement or refund?
Often not. The Cosori recall, for example, did not require a receipt. Check the notice for your model.
Are air fryers unsafe?
The recalls concern specific models with identified faults. They do not show that air fryers in general are unsafe, but they are a good reason to check your model number and to register a new appliance.
